One of the quiet reasons La Mesa works is the density of services in a small footprint. From Tierra Del Rey, a two-mile radius covers a regional shopping mall, three healthcare systems, two grocery stores, and a public community college. You don't have to get on a freeway for any of it.

Grossmont Center is the anchor — a full regional mall 1.4 miles away with a Macy's, a Target, a Walmart, a food court, a movie theater, and a CVS. It's not a destination mall, but for weekly errands it's indispensable.

Healthcare in La Mesa is unusually good for a suburb.
