The La Mesa Village Guide: What to Do 10 Minutes from Tierra Del Rey

La Mesa Village is the reason people move here. It's the walkable downtown slice of the city — about a mile and a half from Tierra Del Rey — and it packs more into six square blocks than most San Diego neighborhoods manage in twenty.

Start with coffee. Public Square Coffee House is the anchor: strong pour-overs, pastries from a local bakery, patio seating on La Mesa Boulevard. From there, walk east along the Boulevard. You'll pass independent boutiques, a vinyl shop, a couple of antique stores, and at least three craft beer spots before you hit the MTS Orange Line trolley station.

Lunch options range from casual (BO-beau kitchen + garden's La Mesa sister location) to the classic (Anthony's Fish Grotto on the hill, overlooking the freeway). Friday afternoons, the Trolley Barn hosts the farmers' market — produce, prepared foods, live music, and a genuinely local crowd.

The village lights up in September for Oktoberfest, which shuts down the Boulevard for a three-day street festival. And in December, the Christmas in the Village tree-lighting draws families from across East County.

From Tierra Del Rey, you have two easy ways in: drive the five-minute shot down Lake Murray Boulevard, or take the trolley one stop from La Mesa Blvd station. Either way, you're home in time for dinner.
